TRIBECA FILMS ACQUIRES SEVEN TITLES FROM TRIBECA, VENICE, SUNDANCE, TIFF, AND OTHER TOP FILM FESTIVALS
Distribution Label From Tribeca Enterprises and Giant Pictures Supports Independent Film Across Streaming Platforms
NEW YORK, NY – (November 20, 2024) – Tribeca Films, the distribution label from Tribeca Enterprises and Giant Pictures, today announced seven films picked up for U.S. distribution: The Featherweight directed by Robert Kolodny, The Graduates directed by Hannah Peterson, Tendaberry directed by Haley Elizabeth Anderson, Born Hungry directed by Barry Avrich, Egghead & Twinkie directed by Sarah Kambe Holland, Wild Goat Surf directed by Caitlyn Sponheimer, and Family Therapy directed by Sonja Prosenc. This is the second set of acquisitions for the distribution label since it launched in April 2024.
“In less than a year, Tribeca Films has acquired 15 titles from leading festivals around the world, furthering our support of emerging filmmakers and independent cinema,” said Tribeca Enterprises Co-Founder and CEO Jane Rosenthal. “We’re excited to introduce this new slate of indies to wider audiences, including two narratives that world premiered at Tribeca Festival – Hannah Peterson’s The Graduates and Sonja Prosenc’s Family Therapy.”
In keeping with Tribeca’s legacy of supporting emerging and underrepresented filmmakers, five of the seven films—The Graduates, Egghead & Twinkie, Wild Goat Surf, Tendaberry, and The Featherweight—are directed by first-time directors; additionally, five of the projects are directed by women. The U.S. rights were acquired following premieres at the Tribeca Festival, Venice International Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Palm Springs International Film Festival, and the Vancouver International Film Festival.
The full slate will stream on Kanopy, Kinema, Fandango At Home, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube Movies & TV, Xfinity On Demand, DirecTV, The Roku Channel, Tubi, Pluto TV, Sling TV, Peacock, Plex, and XUMO, as well as the Tribeca Channel. The Featherweight—Set in 1964, a camera crew follows Willie Pep, a retired featherweight boxing champion. Down and out in Hartford CT, married to a woman half his age and with a drug-addled son and mounting debts, Pep decides to make a return to the ring. Directed by Robert Kolodny. Produced by Steve Loff, Asger Hussain, James Madio, Bennett Elliott, and Robert Greene. With James Madio, Ruby Wolf, and Keir Gilchrist. Venice International Film Festival 2023 world premiere.
The Graduates—A year after her boyfriend dies from gun violence, a young woman prepares to graduate high school as she navigates an uncertain future alongside a community that is searching for ways to heal. Written and directed by Hannah Peterson. Executive produced by Chloé Zhao, Meena Harris, and John Cho. With Mina Sundwall, Alex Hibbert, Yasmeen Fletcher, and John Cho. Tribeca Festival 2023 world premiere, where it won Best Cinematography for U.S. Narrative Feature.
Tendaberry—When her boyfriend goes back to Ukraine to be with his ailing father, 23-year-old Dakota anxiously navigates her precarious new reality, surviving on her own in New York City. Directed by Haley Elizabeth Anderson. With Kota Johan, Yuri Plesken, and Michael Donovan. Sundance Film Festival world premiere, where it was nominated for the NEXT Innovator Award.
Born Hungry—In this inspiring story of grit and determination, a runaway child from the streets of India is adopted by a family and becomes one of the top chefs in the world. Directed by Barry Avrich. Produced by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Mark Selby. With Thomas Zacharias and Shipra Khanna. Palm Springs International 2024 world premiere.
Egghead & Twinkie—After coming out to her parents, an Asian American teenage girl takes off on a road trip to meet her online crush with the help of her nerdy best friend. Directed by Sarah Kambe Holland. With Sabrina Jie-A-fa and Louis Tomeo. Toronto International Film Festival 2023 Canadian premiere.
Wild Goat Surf—Set in a rundown Okanagan RV park during the summer of 2003, Goat, a surfing-obsessed, twelve-year-old skater girl, navigates the unbridled, unstructured, summer days of youth, dreaming about becoming a surfer. Directed by Caitlyn Sponheimer. Produced by Mike Johnson, and Caitlyn Sponheimer. Executive Produced by Abubakar Salim, Robert Montcalm, and Dyllón Burnside. With Shayelin Martin and Leandro Guedes. Vancouver International Film Festival 2023 world premiere.
Family Therapy—A young stranger disrupts a seemingly perfect family's life, exposing their internal issues, fears, and dysfunctional relationships as external chaos invades their once idyllic existence. Directed by Sonja Prosenc. With Marko Mandic, Aliocha Schneider, and Judita Frankovic. Tribeca Festival 2024 world premiere.
