NEW YORK AND LISBON – (September 10, 2024) – Tribeca Enterprises, SIC, the Portuguese broadcast company, its streaming platform OPTO, and the City of Lisbon today announced the initial programming lineup for the inaugural Tribeca Festival Lisboa, including a mix of U.S. independent films, Portuguese films, series, podcasts and music showcases, and live talks with international and local stars. The lineup highlights the top films from the 2024 film festival circuit while also championing rising talent coming out of Portugal today.

“Twenty-two years ago, Jane Rosenthal and I founded the Tribeca Festival to help revitalize lower Manhattan through the power of film, art, and storytelling. This mission remains our North Star,” said Tribeca co-founder Robert De Niro. “Each year, we aim to unify communities, ignite creativity, and inspire new waves of innovation. It means a great deal to us to bring this same spirit to Lisbon–a city bursting with renewed cultural and economic promise.”

Tribeca Festival Lisboa will showcase eight U.S. films, including top winners from this year’s Tribeca Festival (Nicholas Colia’s “Griffin in Summer”), Cannes Film Festival (Sean Baker’s “Anora”), Sundance Film Festival (Alessandra Lacorazza Samudio’s “In the Summers”), and SXSW (Tracie Laymon’s “Bob Trevino Likes It”), bringing the best of independent American film to Lisbon this fall. The festival will also host the Portuguese premiere of “Ezra” followed by a talkback with Academy Award-winning actor Robert De Niro and the international premiere of “A Bronx Tale,The Original One Man Show” followed by a talkback with writer, director, and star Chazz Palminteri. Additional titles include the Portuguese premiere of “Jazzy” executive produced by Academy Award-nominated actress Lily Gladstone and the Portuguese premiere of “Group Therapy” featuring world-renowned comedians Neil Patrick Harris, Mike Birbiglia, Tig Notaro, and others.

“For more than two decades, Tribeca has passionately championed independent filmmakers and emerging talent from across the globe,” said Tribeca co-founder and CEO Jane Rosenthal. “We’re proud to continue the tradition this fall, bringing the best of American independent cinema to Portugal, while also partnering with the City of Lisbon and the team at Grupo Impresa to showcase the country’s rising talent.”

Over the course of two days, nearly 20 star-studded panels will tackle topics of pressing importance to today’s global community of filmmakers and artists, including the impact of AI on filmmaking, representation in media and entertainment, the future of streaming, and the craft of great storytelling. The panels will feature international stars such as De Niro, Tribeca co-founder and CEO and Academy Award and Emmy-nominated producer Jane Rosenthal, EGOT Whoopi Goldberg, filmmaker Patty Jenkins, Academy Award-nominated actor Griffin Dunne, and Palminteri. Joining the conversations will be some of the most prominent voices in Portugal today, including Ricardo Araújo Pereira, Daniela Ruah, and César Mourão.

Complementing the lineup of U.S. films, the festival will also highlight the best films and series from Portugal. Attendees will be treated to a special screening of the highly anticipated Portuguese series “Azul,” César Mourão’s feature narrative “Podia Ter Esperado Por Agosto,” the world premiere of “Unicorn,” a series about the culture of startups, and screenings of short films such as “Era Uma Vez No Apocalipse,” “Os Sonhos Continuam,” and “O Afinador de Silêncios.”

“This October, Tribeca Festival Lisboa will be the must-attend event, bringing together visionary talent from around the world to celebrate and explore the art of storytelling in all its forms,” said Francisco Pedro Pinto Balsemão, CEO of Grupo Impresa. “The collaboration between SIC, OPTO, and Tribeca promises to be a cultural force, offering our local Portuguese talent the visibility and international recognition they deserve.”

As with the annual Tribeca Festival in New York City, Tribeca Festival Lisboa will reach beyond film to encompass the full range of storytelling mediums, including podcasts and live music. Attendees can look forward to live recordings of one of Portugal's most popular podcast series – “Geração 70,” “Geração 80,” and “Geração 90” – as well Ricardo Araújo Pereira’s podcast “Coisa Que Não Edifica Nem Destrói,” which returns for a second season this fall.

“Lisbon was recently recognized as the most innovative city in Europe, surpassing more than 250 cities — a milestone few thought possible. By hosting the first European edition of the Tribeca Festival, we have solidified our position as the go-to destination in Europe for lovers of culture, art, and innovation,” said Carlos Moedas, Mayor of Lisbon. “I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and the entire Tribeca team for choosing Lisbon. This choice is a direct acknowledgment of the incredible journey the city has embarked on over the past three years, making it one of the most attractive cities in the world.”

The programming lineup is detailed below. Tribeca Festival Lisboa will take place October 17-19, 2024. Festival passes are available for purchase here.
