New York, NY, April 23, 2024 – The 2024 Tribeca Festival, presented by OKX, today announced its lineup of short narrative, documentary, and animated films, as well as music videos. This year’s Festival, which takes place June 5-16, showcases 12 short film sections, presented by Starbucks, programmed to delight audiences with heartwarming and hilarious storytelling.
The 2024 shorts lineup features 87 total selections from 101 filmmakers, including 65 films in competition and 10 music videos. There are a record-breaking number of countries represented this year from Saudi Arabia, Côte D'Ivoire, Martinique, Chile, Qatar, and more (27). For the first time, the majority of the program is directed by female filmmakers. The lineup includes 50 world premieres, seven international premieres, six North American premieres, two U.S. premieres, and 22 New York premieres. Seven directors return to Tribeca with their latest projects.
The program’s four categories—narrative shorts, documentary shorts, animated shorts, and music videos—thematically highlight and explore bold stories of joy, love, and safety, showcasing expressions of Black freedom, the Latin American experience, and Caribbean culture. This year’s selections examine the follies of youth and the absurdities of life with humor and hubris.
World premieres include Motorcycle Mary, directed by Haley Watson and produced by two-time Oscar winner Ben Proudfoot and seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton, a profile on legendary motorsports pioneer Mary McGee; Ripe!, directed by TUSK and produced by two-time World Cup champion and Olympic gold medalist Kelley O’Hara, a not-so-straightforward queer love story; Bite starring Troian Bellisario, a story of regaining one's identity after overcoming PTSD; and Out of the Dark: Cal Calamia, an intimate look at Cal Calamia, a transgender marathon runner advocating for athletic inclusion. The New York narrative shorts lineup includes the world premieres of Happy to Help You starring Amy Sedaris and Jeremy Beiler, and Veo Veo A Family, a story of familial bonds starring Carla Gugino and KO.
Whoopi Goldberg’s curated animated shorts program celebrates enduring friendships in Nate & John, escaping loneliness with adventure in the anime short Budō, and overcoming mental health challenges in In The Shadow Of the Cypress. Additionally, the electrifying music video lineup, curated by music video programmer Sharon Badal, spans pop country pulsating rhythms with Lanie Gardner’s Six Feet Deep; the latest retro synth-pop hit from Conan Gray; Never Ending Song, an electro-funk song from Wednesday Campanella; Prince Shoutoku, an all-new Bad Bunny musical from Armani Ortiz; and the heartfelt melodies of Zach Bryan’s Nine Ball.
“Tribeca received more than 8,000 short film submissions, and for the first time, we’re proud to present a majority-female directed program,” said Tribeca VP of Shorts Programming Ben Thompson. “We hope our 12 curated shorts programs—and our first-ever online music video competition—will delight, inspire, and even titillate our enthusiastic New York audiences as they discover diverse storytelling from original voices all over the world.”
The Tribeca Festival is curated by Festival Director and SVP of Programming Cara Cusumano, Artistic Director Frédéric Boyer; VP of Shorts Programming Ben Thompson; Senior Programmers Liza Domnitz, Faridah Gbadamosi, Jarod Neece, José F. Rodriguez; Programmers Casey Baron, Jason Gutierrez, Jonathan Penner, and Madison Egan; VP of Games and Immersive Casey Baltes and Immersive Curator Ana Brzezińska; EVP of Artist Relations Nancy Lefkowitz and VP of Artist Relations Meredith Mohr; Curator of Audio Storytelling Davy Gardner; Music Programmer Vincent Cassous; along with a team of associate programmers; supported and inspired by the legendary Paula Weinstein.
