Feature Documentary | United States | 108 MINUTES | EnglishBiography, Dance, Disability, Documentary, Women
Derek Hough, one of the most well-known, prolific and charismatic dancers of his generation, married fellow dancer Hayley Erbert in 2023. Their love story seemed charmed and predestined from moment one — both preternaturally gifted movers who had trained for the majority of their lives to reach the apex of the contemporary dance world. A lifelong pas de deux that crackled with sensuality and athleticism.
In Jason Bergh’s intimate documentary, we are taken behind the curtain on Derek and Hayley’s striking “Symphony of Dance” touring show. But what begins as a glimpse into the marathon of night-after-night performances becomes something entirely different when Hayley is forced to fight for her life following a shocking health crisis. Hayley bravely allows cameras to capture her brutally difficult recovery as she struggles to stand, walk and, ultimately, dance again, while Derek battles with his own conflicted emotions surrounding the event. Symphony of Dance is a moving portrait of a couple facing an unexpected moment with grace, faith and perseverance.—Liza Domnitz
