After a crushing breakup, Lucy moves back in with her eccentric single dad and dives into bad dates, false starts, and growing pains. Big-hearted and sharply funny, Lucy Schulman is a charming comedic coming-of-age story from multihyphenate Tribeca alum Ellie Sachs.

Lucy is stumbling — through boyfriends who consume her attention, friendships she can't quite hold onto, and an almost-too-close relationship with her loving dad. She's in her late twenties, not yet sure who she is, making wrong choices for the right reasons and agreeing to things when she should push back. Lucy Schulman is messy and recognizable in the way that the best coming-of-age stories are, even when you're technically past the age.

Ellie Sachs writes, directs and stars as Lucy with a sincerity that's hard to fake. The film doesn't manufacture, conflict or force big dramatic turns. Instead, it lets you fall into Lucy's life and watch her slowly figure herself out, in the vein of Frances Ha or the kind of New York indie where the city and the character feel inseparable. It's a low-stakes film by design, but the specificity of its observations gives it a warmth and humanity that sticks with you. A promising debut from a filmmaker finding her voice.—Jarod Neece
