Told from the perspectives of 12 unrelated strangers, IX XI intertwines their stories to emphasize the human reaction to the shock and devastation of 9/11. Framing his subjects in glassy pools and mirrored rooms, director Sean Wilsey brings together individuals from all walks of life. This staging marks a visual and emotional connection to the 9/11 Memorial and the design of the Twin Towers. From a professional skateboarder to a cartoonist, this documentary’s interviewees share their memories of New York City and the World Trade Center before the attacks, as well as where they were on that fateful day.
While there are numerous documented heroes and feats of human bravery on 9/11, IX XI highlights the mundanity of life leading up to this day, as well as the uniqueness of how each person experienced this tragedy. Wilsey shapes his documentary with the use of archival and cinematic footage, complimenting the notion that traumatic events can connect human beings in unexpected ways. IX XI encourages an open conversation about the continued impact of this event.—Cara Cusumano
