Hadestown: The Musical

Feature Narrative | United States | 141 MINUTES | EnglishMusic
In March 2019, writer-composer Anaïs Mitchell and director Rachel Chavkin brought their acclaimed musical Hadestown to the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway, where it continues to be performed eight times a week. The production was nominated for fourteen Tony Awards (the most of any show that year), winning eight. Exploring the iconic Greek myths of Orpheus, Eurydice, Persephone and Hades within the context of an industrial hellscape, Mitchell’s show has become a worldwide cultural phenomenon, traveling across the United States on a national tour with additional productions in London, South Korea, Australia, and the Netherlands. Six years after stepping out on stage together, Reeve Carney, Eva Noblezada, Patrick Page, Amber Gray, and André De Shields reunite, supported by members of the West End cast, for a spellbinding show that reaffirms the magic of musical theater.
Brett Sullivan’s approach to directing Hadestown: The Musical fits seamlessly into the world that Mitchell and Chavkin have created, offering new ways of looking at live theater and highlighting the extraordinary precision, craftsmanship, and teamwork required to make each show happen day after day. With gorgeous music, brilliant performances by its all-star cast, and a timeless love story at its center, Hadestown: The Musical is for both diehard fans of the musical and newcomers alike.—Cyrus Cohen
