CO_SONIC 38,144 km² (Spatialized in 4DSOUND with MONOM)
Official Selection - Immersive
| Slovenia | 7 MINUTESIn CO_SONIC 38,144 km², a poetic reflection and AI-powered sound landscape, artist Robertina Šebjanič explores the story of coexistence of species and lifeforms through an observation of a river as one entity. The 4DSOUND adaptation for Tribeca Festival integrates the sounds of the Hudson River and bustling New York streets, blending them with the sonic presence of the more-than-human voices of natural and AI-generated entities from the Ljubljanica River, and the Atlantic Ocean.
This bespoke sonic installation brings us closer to the river’s flora and fauna, while drawing attention to the problematic nature of human control over aquatic environments. Rivers are dynamic bodies of water in permanent flux, constantly reshaping their beds, but due to human intervention only one-third of the world's rivers are still free-floated.
CO_SONIC 38,144 km² challenges the anthropocentric view of natural environments by utilizing AI to synthesize the lifeworlds of various creatures sharing the same ecosystem. One of the project's main features is an attempt to consider the river from the perspective of its animal residents, and imagine it through the experience of its inhabitants. The project calls to build empathy for 'more-than-human' entities and to adopt strategies for ecological (co)development for a future when humans will be long gone.
