Drama
When 9-year-old Emily is removed from the care of her aging grandfather by a rookie child-welfare agent, she is placed with the witchy, funny, and unpredictable Sylvia. As the two build a surprising bond, they find that forging a new family is not without risk.

Emily (Everly Carganilla), a young child who lives with her loving grandfather in New Jersey, is starting to be affected by the advancement of her caretaker’s dementia. When a novice Child Welfare agent (Aubrey Plaza) comes to assess the situation, she extracts Emily from her home in a panic and places her in the care of Sylvia (Susan Sarandon), a kind but mischievous old woman. As the two spend more time together, their bond grows deeper, but the mysteries of Sylvia’s past threaten to unravel their future.

In his feature debut, Zach Woods’ (known for acting in Silicon Valley and The Office) direction brings an understated surreality to the family drama, crafting a world where past and present fold in upon each other and make memories collective rather than individual. While the script supplies Carganilla and Sarandon with ample comic banter to show off their chemistry, the film’s most exceptional quality is the stark way it allows its characters to express their emotional shifts through physical gestures of the voluntary variety and otherwise.—Cara Cusumano
